Costs and local steps by country

Costs in your currency, plus what's specific to applying from there, such as how the German mission takes applications.

How the route works

You apply to a university (often through uni-assist), receive admission, open a blocked account, arrange health insurance and book a visa appointment at the German mission for your country. Waiting times for appointments vary a lot between countries.

The blocked account

The money is paid into a special account and released to you monthly after you arrive. The yearly amount is set by the German government and usually changes each year.

Common questions

Do I need an agent to get a German visa appointment?

No. German missions say applicants don't need an agent for appointments, and in Pakistan the embassy's waiting list is free. Don't pay anyone for a slot.

Can I work while studying in Germany?

Students can work 140 full days or 280 half days a year, or up to 20 hours a week during lecture periods.

Can I stay after graduating?

Graduates can usually get a residence permit to look for a job after their studies. Check the length on the official page when you apply.
